Of course I had no way to relate to this existence, it was well outside my life experience. But Viktor Frankl spoke of two things that did resonate: the stripping of one’s former identity, and provisional existence.

‘We all had once been or had fancied ourselves to be “somebody”,’ he said. ‘Now we were treated like complete nonentities… the average prisoner felt himself utterly degraded.’

Former prisoners, he said, when relating their experiences, agreed that ‘the most depressing influence of all was that a prisoner could not know how long his term of imprisonment would be… a provisional existence of unknown limit.’ Sometimes a prisoner would set a date for emancipation, like the next Christmas Day. When that emancipation didn’t come, they gave up hope.
